Which Subaru Models are Partial Zero Emissions Vehicles?

So, the big question is: which Subaru models in our inventory are the most environmentally-friendly? Well, there are actually a number of 2018-2019 Subaru models in our inventory that are PZEV models, booth sedans and crossovers, including the:

  • Subaru Legacy (25 mpg city/35 mpg highway)
  • Subaru Outback (25 mpg city/32 mpg highway)
  • Subaru Impreza (28 mpg city/38 mpg highway)
  • Subaru Crosstrek (27 mpg city/33 mpg highway)
  • And the Subaru Forester (26 mpg city/32 mpg highway)

What is a PZEV?

You might hear the phrase Partial Zero-Emissions Vehicle, or PZEV, used a lot in the media today. A PZEV is essentially a vehicle that, while it might still feature an internal combustion engine, is still considerably less detrimental for the environment than other vehicles such as SUVs or even lawn mowers. Even better, a PZEV model is considerably cheaper to manufacture as they only require minor variations on their current internal combustion engine, rather than a complete engine overhaul as required to make hybrid models, electric cars and hydrogen fuel cell cars. In this manner, a PZEV is able to be sold to drivers like you at a very affordable price!

The PZEV category was first created by the California Air Resources Board in 1998 as part of their state's laws on regulating carbon emissions; at the time, these laws were in fact much stricter than the laws on the federal level. Since that time, this term has been incorporated into the legal vernacular of many other state's carbon emissions laws, with other variations of this category reflecting other low-emissions vehicles. Many Subaru models like the Legacy and the Outback are universally categorized as PZEVs because of their fuel economy and low emissions. In fact, the Subaru company's Energy and Environmental Activities Manager, Dave Barker, mentioned a couple years ago that "tailpipe emission standards for our PZEV vehicles are approximately 80 percent lower than the standard for our counterpart vehicles." This number has only increased since then for many 2018-2019 Subaru models.
