Can the Subaru Forester Tow?

The short answer's yes, up to 1,500 pounds when properly equipped. However, step into the driver's seat here at Subaru Superstore of Chandler, and you'll find there's plenty more under the hood to help open up a world of adventure here in south-central Arizona.

If you know Subaru Forester, whether from its appearance in Tokyo at the eponymous motor show in November 1995, its debut to fanfare in 1997, or as the rugged crossover of choice among Arizonians today in 2019, you know what our automaker's compact SUV has been since then: big on capability. Driving it is a 182-horsepower, 2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER engine, capable of shelling out 176 pound-feet of torque, paired with a Lineartronic® CVT, and incorporating an Auto Stop-Start System to optimize fuel economy. The latter makes Forester just as distance-going a hauler as it is a worker, capable of up to an EPA-estimated 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.

The takeaway: not only can it tow around 1,500 pounds, in addition to a whopping 76.1 cubic feet of luggage, camping gear, and other weekend getaway essentials with rear seats collapsed. Forester can also do it efficiently, and moreover, with peace of mind.

Of course, that owes to more than just a horizontally opposed or "flat-four" engine and the improved balance afforded by this setup. It also owes to a four-wheel independent suspension, designed agile and responsive for both ride comfort and enjoyable handling, not to mention passive technologies like Vehicle Dynamics Control and a Traction Control System. Together with others like Trailer Stability Assist and Hill Descent Control, they help keep both the ride and your quarry level as well as safely manage steep terrain declines. It's also thanks to Active Torque Vectoring, which make Forester a precision instrument around corners. It even due indirectly to towering ground clearance -- 8.7 inches of obstacle-avoiding height. But perhaps more than anything, it's due to Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

A permanent, always-on system standard across the Forester lineup, Symmetrical AWD is structural rather than electronic, proactive with traction versus "slip-then-grip." Pair it with X-MODE®, a wheel slip-reducing feature standard in Forester Premium and later, and the result is both over- and understeer compensation you're unlikely to find elsewhere. Factor in another standard, our automaker's exclusive EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology, and protection, too, becomes comprehensive. The suite incorporates adaptive cruise control for safe distancing in traffic and also builds in lane departure, sway warning, and keep assist and pre-collision brakes, simplifying staying on track and clear of potential accidents.

What does this mean for you? New horizons for exploring your neighborhood of the American Southwest. Just imagine hitching up a light towable tent camper or a dirt bike or two for a trip out to the Cave Springs or Manzanita campgrounds near Sedona, or taking an ATV out to Bonita Canyon, southeast of Willcox. You could take that light trailerful of mountain biking, fishing, or picnicking gear in tow and set a course for the Lynx Lake Recreation Area in Prescott National Forest. And let's not forget your prospects for Grand Canyon National Park!

There's plenty more to Subaru Forester that makes it a seasoned orienteer, too. Your test drive's just around the bend here at 1050 South Gilbert Road in Chandler, AZ. Give us a call or take a ride out to visit, and we'll introduce you!
