Compare the Subaru Forester to the Chevrolet Equinox in Chandler and Mesa, AZ

With the latest Subaru Forester model, the automaker once again delivers on its reputation for safety, technology, and rugged capability. Fully redesigned in 2019, the Forester further improves on its winning formula, offering Arizona drivers an excellent combination of spacious and versatile accommodations, advanced tech, and sure sure-footed handling in all conditions.

The Forester often draws comparisons to other options in the compact crossover segment, notably the Chevy Equinox. A popular model in its own right, the Equinox has its strengths. But when compared head-to-head with the Subaru Forester, its weaknesses become more apparent. Here's how the two match up in a few key areas.

  • Horsepower: Under the hood, the Forester's base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine pairs with a continuously variable automatic transmission and produces 182 horsepower, besting the 170 horsepower of the Equinox's standard engine.

  • All-Wheel-Drive: Like all Subaru models, the Forest comes standard with an advanced symmetrical all-wheel-drive system, providing enhanced control on a variety of road surfaces. The symmetrical drivetrain features half-axles of equal length. The symmetrical layout of the AWD system, combined with the boxer flat-engine and transmission over the front axle, results in precise weight distribution and a low center of gravity for impressive handling. Conversely, the Equinox's conventional all-wheel-drive system is only available as an option on the top three trims, and cannot be equipped on the base trim.

  • Efficiency: Even with standard all-wheel-drive, the Forester (EPA-estimated 33 mpg highway) offers better fuel economy than the front-wheel-drive Equinox (EPA-estimated 31 mpg).

  • Ground Clearance: The Forester is also better at leaving the confines of the asphalt, providing a full inch more ground clearance (8.7) than the Equinox (7.6).

Driver Assistance and Safety

In addition to providing standard symmetrical all-wheel-drive and capable versatility, Subaru is well-known for its commitment to safety. That commitment is on full display in the Forester, which offers a full array of advanced driver-assistance technologies, of which most are standard equipment. Every Forester trim includes Subaru's EyeSight suite of driver aids, including:

  • Pre-Collision Warning
  • Pre-Collision Throttle Management
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • EyeSight Adaptive Cruise Control (with added Lane Centering feature for 2020)
  • EyeSight Lane Keep Assist with Sway Warning

The Chevy Equinox offers some of these systems as standard equipment for the 2020 model year. However, it lacks a popular and useful key feature, adaptive cruise control. To get this feature on the Equinox, you have to choose the very top trim level and an additional package.

Seating and Cargo Space

  • Passenger Accommodations: While the Forester and Equinox offer similar rear-seat measurements, the Forester provides two more inches of hip-room and shoulder room. Upfront, the Forester offers 2.4 inches more legroom and an inch more shoulder room.

  • Cargo Capacity: A hallmark of a good utility vehicle is its capacity for carrying more than just people. With all seats in place, the Forester retains 33 cubic feet for groceries, luggage, etcetera. The Equinox falls behind a little, offering just 29.9 cubic feet. With the 60/40-split rear seats folded, the Forester's available cargo capacity grows to 70.9 cubic feet. The Equinox maxes out at 63.9 cubic feet.
